One of the reasons I started American Nomad was to highlight small towns and community events that bring people together. As a singer-songwriter by trade one of my favorite things to do is a ‘music detour’ where you drive to music festivals, community art fairs and check out shows at iconic concert venues. My home state of North Carolina has a ton of grooving music festivals coming up in October. Many of these festivals have free events (or are a great price for any budget).
Music Detours: North Carolina Music Festivals Fall in Love With in October
North Carolina is a quilt of unique culture and natural scenery woven together from the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains to windswept dunes of Outer Banks beaches, and bustling city centers. One thing that unites North Carolinians is our deep love of music. Our state has a rich and vibrant musical tradition that echoes through its landscapes.
This is a state where genres have melded into a beautiful, diverse tapestry. From the haunting ballads of Scots-Irish settlers to the powerful rhythms of African American roots music, and on to the modern-day sounds of pop, reggae, and hip-hop, North Carolina has it all.
It’s the home of legends like Earl Scruggs, the banjo pioneer who transformed bluegrass, and the masterful flat-picker Doc Watson, whose music captured the spirit of the mountains. Today, that legacy lives on through world-renowned touring acts, including the incredible Kruger Brothers, a Bluegrass group with roots in Switzerland who have found a home and a loyal following right here.
Love Soul and Jazz – did you know Billy Strayhorn and Miles Davis hail from NC? James Brown’s band featured many Kinston born musicians – that’s something to ‘Heel’ Good About.
While we often think of fall as a time for apple picking, pumpkin patches, and fiery foliage, for music lovers, it’s a season to grab your guitar pick or fiddle bow and join a jam session. The crisp air and the golden light of autumn create the perfect backdrop for gathering with the community, sharing stories, and making music together.
This fall, North Carolina is set to host a variety of fun—and many free—music events, bringing people together with good vibrations. So, as the days get shorter and the nights get cooler, trade your pumpkin spice latte for a front-row seat. There’s a soundtrack waiting for you in North Carolina, and it’s one you won’t want to miss.

Raleigh Wide Open: October 2nd-4th
This fall, a new festival will carry the torch for a beloved tradition. Raleigh Wide Open continues the legacy of the city’s celebrated Bluegrass (IBMA) Festival, which, after a decade of drawing crowds to the “City of Oaks,” has recently relocated to Chattanooga.
Presented by Pinecone Music, the City of Raleigh, and various sponsors, this three-day, jam-packed event is more than a festival—it’s a vibrant celebration of North Carolina’s music and community. Downtown Raleigh will once again come alive, offering music lovers multiple stages of free live music and a bustling marketplace of local vendors. For headliner performances, nearby Red Hat Amphitheater will host ticketed shows featuring incredible acts like JJ Grey and MOFRO and Greensky Bluegrass. For me, this year’s lineup holds a special significance. I’m personally looking forward to catching sets from rising star Tray Wellington, local favorites Chatham County Line, the legendary Jim Lauderdale, and the always-energetic Town Mountain (in one of their final shows before a touring hiatus). I’m also excited to discover the talents of Eliza Meyer and the New Carolina Tar Heels. Website
Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival (Pittsboro, NC) October 2nd-5th
A beloved tradition is returning to the rolling hills of Chatham County this fall. The Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival is a truly unique event—a four-day, family-friendly celebration of music, art, and community.
Beyond the stages, the festival grounds come alive with a diverse array of activities. You can explore a bustling marketplace of arts and crafts, bring the kids for a wide range of children’s activities…It’s a place where music is just one part of a larger, vibrant tapestry. And of course, the music lineup is nothing short of incredible. You’ll get to see performances from Americana favorites like Donna the Buffalo and, a personal highlight for me, the legendary bluegrass pioneer Del McCoury Band (fun fact – he was born near Bakersville NC in the NC Mountains). This is a festival that truly embodies the spirit of community and the joy of shared arts. Website
Ol’ Front Porch Music Festival (Oriental, NC) October 3rd & 4th
Nestled in the charming sailing port of Oriental, this festival offers a dose of pure Neuse River vibes. Just a short drive from New Bern and Morehead City, this free, fun, and family-friendly event is a true gem of the North Carolina coast.
The festival’s magic lies in its unique setting, with music spilling out from porches throughout the “sailing capital” of North Carolina. It’s a sonic blend of Folk, Americana, Bluegrass, Country, Gospel, and Jazz that perfectly complements the easy-going coastal atmosphere. This year’s lineup features a special performance from headliner Rissi Palmer, a North Carolina-born and bred Americana singer-songwriter with a powerful voice that will blow you away.
Beyond the stages, the festival is a celebration of the village itself. You can enjoy the charm of this walkable town as you meander through rows of arts, crafts, and food vendors. The best part? It’s completely FREE to attend!

John C. Campbell Folk School Fall Festival (Brasstown, NC) October 4-5th
Tucked away in the beautiful hills of southwestern North Carolina, the renowned John C. Campbell Folk School is a true treasure. This year, the school is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and the annual Fall Festival is the perfect way to mark the occasion. Held as the leaves begin to paint a canvas of color across the mountains, this event is a must-attend for anyone who finds inspiration in art, music, and community.
This is a festival designed to ignite the artist’s heart. Visitors can explore the stunning 270-acre campus, which will be bustling with over 230 craft vendors and 29 food vendors. What truly sets this event apart is the opportunity to witness artistry in action. Close to 75 makers will be demonstrating traditional and contemporary crafts across multiple locations, from pottery to woodworking.
The festival also features two music and dance stages, showcasing dozens of talented local and regional performers. In addition, the Demonstration Stage and three other dedicated areas will highlight traditional skills and craft practices. For those who want to get hands-on, the historic Keith House’s Community Room will be open for participatory activities, inviting everyone to try their hand at an Appalachian tradition.
Each year, over 13,000 visitors from across the Southern Appalachian region (including Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia) attend this event, a testament to its vibrant celebration of the spirit of community and creativity. Website
Hook & Line: The Thompson Music & Arts Heritage Festival (Mebane, NC) October 10th-11th
This festival is more than just music—it’s a celebration of a profound legacy. Hook & Line honors the musical heritage of world-renowned first cousins Odell Thompson (1911-1994) and Joe Thompson (1918-2012), two figures who played a pivotal role in preserving the state’s deep Black fiddle and banjo traditions.
This weekend is a testament to community, art, dance, and memory. The festival features a cavalcade of touring and local musicians, all celebrating the concert spirit of Odell and Joe. This year, the event is headlined by the incredible Grammy and Pulitzer Prize-winning musician and scholar, Rhiannon Giddens, who is a passionate advocate for preserving and sharing this musical history.
All festival events are FREE for everyone to enjoy! The festivities kick off on Friday evening at the Mebane Arts and Community Center, followed by a full day of music and celebration on Saturday at the Mebane Community Park.

Moorefields Bluegrass Festival in Hillsborough NC: October 11th
Tucked away on a 75 acre estate just outside of Hillsborough NC is the architectural and historical gem of Moorefields. Once the summer home of Supreme Court Justice Alfred Moore, this circa 1785 home has played witness to over 240 years of history! The house museum invites guests to learn about the legacy of Alfred Moore and other owners of this 18th-century plantation house.
On October 11th, Moorefields will play host to an amazing Bluegrass Festival featuring local bands like Slippery HIll, Pickard Mountain, GrassStreet, Nixon Williams & Gage and Drive Time…Bring a picnic or enjoy delicious food from area food trucks and vendors. Music Itinerary Tip: Moorefields is just down the road from Mebane – try catching the Hook and Line Festival on October 10th and Moorefields on October 11th for a full MUSIC weekend.
Duck Jazz Festival (Duck, NC) October 11th-12th
Let the ocean waves and Outer Banks vibes draw you into the quaint coastal town of Duck for this amazing and FREE jazz festival. The lineup features an eclectic mix of national, regional, and local jazz musicians, brass bands, and vocalists.
The festival kicks off with a special “Concert on the Green” on Saturday and continues with a full day of music on two stages on Sunday, making for a perfect coastal weekend. For me, the personal highlight is always Shayna Steele, a dynamic vocalist I’ve been fortunate to see live several times. Her flawless voice and powerful stage presence will have you “coasting” to some truly amazing tunes.
While you’re in the area, be sure to check out my favorite Outer Banks haunt: the historic Currituck Lighthouse and the stunning Whalehead Club in nearby Corolla. Both are incredible places to explore and soak in the rich coastal history.
Autumn Leaves Festival (Mount Airy, NC) October 10th-12th
Tucked in the foothills of the Sauratown Mountains, with a view of the iconic Pilot Mountain, lies the charming community of Mount Airy. This town, famously known as the real-life inspiration for “Mayberry” from The Andy Griffith Show, still exudes that small-town charm and southern hospitality.
On October 10th-12th, the town celebrates its rich heritage and the beauty of the season with the annual Autumn Leaves Festival. The festival features multiple stages with live bluegrass and country bands, as well as informal jam sessions that invite musicians to join in.
Beyond the music, this is a quintessential fall festival experience. You can explore a wide array of local vendors, peruse handcrafted arts and crafts, and of course, enjoy some delicious food. A must-try is the Surry County Sonker—a cobbler-like dessert native to the area. It’s a warm, fruity, and doughy treat that perfectly captures the taste of autumn in the Piedmont.

Bluegrass Island Festival (Manteo, NC) October 16th-18th
Set your course for the Outer Banks this fall for one of North Carolina’s premier music events. Held on the historic Roanoke Island—the very place where the legendary Lost Colony vanished in the 1580s—this festival offers a unique blend of history, charm, and world-class music. You can take in the island’s captivating ambiance while immersing yourself in the seaside sounds of the best in bluegrass.
The Bluegrass Island Festival is a true powerhouse, featuring an incredible lineup of legends and top-tier talent. This year’s roster includes icons like Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, the legendary Pam Tillis, North Carolina’s own Steep Canyon Rangers, the Dan Tyminski Band, and many more. LEAF Festival in Black Mountain NC – October 16th-19th
A beloved arts and crafts festival at Lake Eden in Black Mountain that celebrates music, art and culture from around the world. It features a diverse lineup of performers, global cuisine, and a variety of workshops. Musical highlights include BeauSoleil, a rocking cajun group and Irish celtic group SOLAS. Festival Website
Lake Lure Arts and Crafts Festival (October 18th)A wonderful festival to celebrate the arts and community in Lake Lure and Chimney Rock areas. Both towns faced extreme devastation during Hurricane Helene and are beginning to open for business. This festival will allow you the chance to see amazing art, listen to live music and try delicious food. I recommend staying at the Lake Lure 1927 Inn. Festival Website
